20 days and counting

We officially have less than three weeks until we move to Washington, and you want to know how much I've packed and prepped? Nada. Nothing. Zilch. I mean, I did some clean out for the village-wide cleanup two weeks ago, but beyond that, I've just been in denial. I think every single MILSPO out there can attest to the fact that it's often a hurry-up-and-wait scenario, and right now I'm just in denial. Here's the thing - summer is the most beautiful time of year here at Fort Drum. The trees are finally green, the birds are chirping, the skies are the most incredible Canadian blue...we survived winter, and now we have to pack it all away and move.

Don't get me wrong - I'm excited to move. I actually like moving and seeing new places. I do not, however, enjoy the process of moving. We made a home here, and now we have to start all over again.

So, as I revel in my lovely state of denial, my mom is coming up this weekend to see Black River one last time prior to our move. We're planning to head to Kingston again (assuming they let me cross the border with the boys without Ryan) and, hopefully, pack a few things away. We'll see how much packing actually gets done, but I know my boys are thrilled that Oma is going to come stay a couple days again. And no, they have no idea right now...we're surprising them!

I know I totally vaguebooked you guys the other day with my post about my passion project, and I apologize for all the cryptic talk! The truth is, I'm writing a book, and I'm excited - and nervous - to begin this project. I've started getting the pieces in motion, and I'm really looking forward to jumping in with both feet. So, fingers crossed this starts moving in the right direction. Also, re: blog changes. I'm transitioning my blog to Wordpress in the next couple weeks. I've thought about it for a while now, and as I transition this to more of my happy, positive, writing space, I'm looking forward to the functionality of it, as a whole.

So, revel in this little bitty baby blog while you can, folks, because changes are coming, and I couldn't be more ready for them!

the making of a passion project

You guys.

It's no secret that I've kind of been on this sort of introspective journey of sorts for a few months now. I've been working hard on self-care, taking the time to build up a better self-image identity, and finding my own voice - or brand. These things are hard for anybody in all walks of life. I feel like, at 32 years old, my biggest fear remains being ordinary, and part of being an Army wife or MILSPO brings this sort of conflict of interests if you will. Ever since I found out that I was passed over for a promotion, searched for a new job to no avail, and went through knee surgery, I've been kind of on this tumultuous little ride that I've been worried I'm going to fall off at any given moment.

But here's the thing; in the throes of yet another night of insomnia, stress, and restlessness, I felt myself being prompted to write something down. Now, some of you who've followed my blog (or my old book blog) for some time know that I'm a writer by trade. My singular lifelong career goal has been to write a book, but I've always been at a loss for what to write about.

Last night though, it was made extremely clear to me what to write, and I finally feel like I have some clarity in all of it. I feel like the Lord works in mysterious ways. He doesn't always tell us what he's doing or why He is doing it, but every. single. thing happens for a reason - of that I have no doubt.

I finally understand why I was passed over for a promotion and why this job hunt hasn't been working so well. I have bigger things on my mind. I have bigger goals. The company I work for is great - truly - because they're going to enable me to follow this passion project, and I absolutely cannot wait to share it with you sooner, hopefully, than later.

If there's one thing I'm learning through all of this, it's to listen and acknowledge the little things. Sometimes we don't figure out what we're supposed to be doing all at once. Sometimes it's a series of little events, moments, and sparks of inspiration that all join together to send an overriding message, and with that message, you find your purpose and your meaning.

I'm a big believer that everything happens for a reason, and I truly cannot wait to share more of this super exciting passion project with you going forward. To start though, get ready for some big blog changes in the coming weeks!

easter weekend 2018

You know those weekends where the best-made plans fall through? This was one of those weekends - and yet, it was also one of the best weekends we've had in a long while. Spencer brought home some sickness last week, and it's been making its way through the household. Porter started his fever Friday, and I felt absolutely awful Saturday. Poor Ryan was hit pretty hard yesterday. Even though we'd planned to go to Syracuse and weren't able, we still had so much fun, and that's kind of what made this weekend so special.

On Saturday, none of us were feeling particularly great, but the weather was beautifully springy, so Spencer and I got outside to decorate some eggs and play with Lindsey across the street for a while. It still hits me sometimes that he's not a toddler anymore. He's a real little boy. He's articulate, thoughtful, smart, and engaged, and he's always on the go. Together, we tackled dyeing Easter eggs (which failed miserably) but were so fun in the process. Pro-tip: if you see someone mention that Cool-Whip will work in place of shaving cream for this Pinterest task, don't listen to them. It doesn't. Oh well, it was fun :)

Sunday was Easter, and Mother Nature and New York decided it would be below freezing all day. We Were all still feeling awful, too, so we decided to forgo the traditional Easter egg hunt in favor of just laying low and enjoying each other's company. Besides their new tradition of going outside to put the flag out each morning, we stayed indoors...together. The boys absolutely loved their Easter baskets this year, and I just wanted to take a moment to talk about them because I'm pretty proud.

We try not to give the boys too much candy. They love it, and what kid doesn't, but we also believe in moderation. So, I wanted their Easter baskets to be more engaging if you will. We put sidewalk chalk, a coloring book, a little Paw Patrol car, a couple of treats, stickers, and more in their baskets. And you know what? They loved it! Spencer is obsessed with is his new toy, which cost less than $3, their coloring books were a huge hit, and they loved the stickers, too. There's something about a more modest Easter basket that just speaks to me. In a world of excess, it's simple, sweet, and fun.

After we opened our baskets, we knew we weren't really going anywhere because all of us felt awful. So, instead of lounging on the couch doing nothing, the boys and I decided to build a fort. We pulled all the dining chairs to the living room, brought all available throw blankets out, and we got to work. It was one of the simplest, funniest, most entertaining things we've done in a while. I mentioned last week that we're working towards minimizing TV usage here, and this is another great indoor activity you can use! The boys didn't want to watch TV once. They were too busy playing and exploring. Letting them be little and enjoying the little things is so, so sweet.

We have two months left in New York, and maybe I'm just waxing nostalgic because of that, but this time here - as hard as it's been - has also been beautiful and fun. We've made memories. We've lived a lot, and we've grown together. This past Easter was beautiful in its simplicity, and I'm so thankful for little moments like these that remind us of what really matters.

I hope you all had a beautiful Easter weekend and are as ready for spring as I am!

5 ways to make deployment or tdy fly by

Ryan was gone for 9 of the 12 months last year, which is hard by any stretch of the imagination. Add two little ones who were, at the time, under 3 and under a year, and it's even harder. The crazy thing is that we're coming up on another separation in the next month or so. No, he's not deploying again, thankfully, but he will be TDY for 6 weeks. That's another 6 weeks without daddy, and it's another 6 weeks that we have to count the days and wait for his return.

I was so blindsided by how hard a deployment would be last year. Look, I knew it would be hard, but I literally had no idea. Especially during the cold winter months, I really struggled. Little by little though, we found a pattern, and we made it work. Heck, we actually had fun! So, as we approach another 6 weeks without our soldier, I wanted to offer up 5 foolproof ways to make any deployment or TDY go by faster.

1 // Stay busy. This is, perhaps, by far the most important of all the tips I can offer up. The worst thing that you can do during a deployment or TDY is to sit on your butt and just wait. Separations are hard. They're a thousand times harder though if you simply sit and wait for hours to tick by. We worked hard to always have something to do. Now, I've mentioned a few times that Fort Drum's events are slim pickin'. However, there is always something to do...you just have to find it. I scoured local events on Facebook, and I checked out the MWR on post to see what was coming up. Step outside of your comfort zone, and just get out there. You'll thank me later!

2 // Set goals. This one will look different for every person. For me, however, setting goals meant setting goals for races. I planned several big running races last year. I ran the NJ Half Marathon in May, the Lake Placid Half Marathon in June, the 18.12 Challenge in August, and then I ran the Chicago Marathon in October, about a month prior to Ryan's return. These were little milestones that helped the days tick by faster. And, I found that having something to train for really made me focus on something other than missing Ryan. It seems like a no-brainer, and it is, but it's hard to remember these things once you're thrown for a loop. Find your own passion, and set some real goals along the way.

3 // Focus on the good. This seems so obvious, but it's actually one of the hardest things for any military spouse (or any spouse for that matter) while their loved one is downrange. Ryan was in a combat zone last year, alternating between Iraq and Kuwait. That's scary. Add in the fact that I felt super alone with two little kids, and it was even harder. We faced a lot of challenges. Both boys were hospitalized. Danny was hit by a car just 6 days into the deployment. I worked hard to blog and journal every night. Consider writing a gratitude journal. Writing everything down will help you get it off your chest keep you sane. Don't settle for constant sadness and grief-filled statuses on social media. They're not bad every now and again to vent, but if that's all you have, it'll drag you down.

4 // Ask for help. I don't know about you, but one of my biggest flaws is the sin of pride. I absolutely hate asking for help. Logically, I know it doesn't imply weakness, but there's something so innately difficult about letting people in. I had to suck up my pride, accept the kind offers of friends, and ask for help when I needed it. Those people who choose to serve you and provide acts of kindness are doing so for a reason! Let them help you! Branch out! Make friends, and step outside of your comfort zone. It'll go a long way, and it'll make those days tick by.

5 // Cultivate friendships. This goes hand-in-hand with the last one. One of the best things you can do for yourself during a spouses' tour is to spend quality time with friends. While Ryan was downrange, my good friend, Mareike, and I got very close. She has two little girls, and I have two little boys. Both our husbands were overseas, and we'd been together at Fort Huachuca, too. We set a standing weekly dinner night on Sunday. It wasn't anything special. We rotated who cooked and who visited. It was something to look forward to each week. We enjoyed adult conversation and let the kiddos burn off steam. Her little family recently PCSd, but I know that's a friendship that will stand the test of time because we went through one of the hardest seasons of life together.

Everyone goes through deployments or TDYs differently, and there is no right or wrong way to deal with them. You can, however, make them go by faster - which makes life more fun and more enjoyable. What are some of your favorite tips/tricks to make time and distance fly by?

valentine's gift ideas for him

Ryan and I don't always go big on Valentine's Day. We're firm believers that you should share the love with your partner every day of the year, and that a greeting card holiday shouldn't be the day for you to really go big. That said, I love spoiling people (especially my husband), and I really wanted to make sure he is extra spoiled this year. Buying gifts for men is hard though...amiright, ladies? Seriously. Men either A) already have it, B) will think it's cliche or C) think it's a waste of money. Maybe that's just my husband but, regardless, I wanted to make sure I had some good options this year, so I found some great ideas I wanted to share!

Just a head's up - this post is not sponsored in any way by uncommon goods, where I found all these products. They don't know I exist, but I sure know that they do! So, I'm linking up today Carolina Charm for Five on Friday and Meet at the Barre for Friday Favorites to share 5 great Valentine's Day gift ideas for him.

1 // For the world traveler. I love unique gift ideas, and this one is so fun. We actually have a push-pin map downstairs (two, really) that we've been pinning for the past couple years. This interactive World Scratch Map is a fun alternative to that though, and I love that it's colorful and interactive. Dress it up with a frame, and it's perfect for that man cave or study. Find this product here.

2 // For the beer connoisseur. Ryan's never been particularly interested in brewing his own beer, but my brother in law is a huge fan. The Texas Chipotle Amber Beer Brewing Kit is highly-rated and, apparently, super easy to follow. If you've got a man in your life who loves trying new flavors and seeing what works, this could be a great option. Find this product here.

3 // For the gadget geek. We all have that guy in life who literally has everything...but they geek out over new tech and fun toys. This 5-in-1 Tool Pen is just that, and at just $25, you really can't go wrong. Honestly, I think Ryan would even like it. This pen doubles as a screwdriver, a touch stylus, a bubble level, and a ruler. Does it get better than that for the handyman on the go? Find this product here.

4 // For the game lover. This is actually one of my favorite products that I found when I browsed the site. We're huge fans of board games and game nights. We love getting together with friends and finding new games to play - whether traditional board games or otherwise. Game of Phones is, obviously, punny...so it got me on that first. Plus, it's a scavenger hunt with your smartphone? Sold. Find this product here.

5 // For the fan of self-care. I don't know about your men, but my husband is a huge fan of personal care (and hygiene)...thanks for that, honey. But seriously, he loves to find great products that smell nice, groom well, and last a long time. Uncommon Goods has a ton of options, but I think he'd really love the Hard Working Man's Hygiene Kit. It features a walnut scrub, soap, hand salve, deodorant, foot salve, hand lotion, and lip balm. Basically, it has everything your guy could need to feel fresh and clean. Find this product here.

I really love that this site features so many truly unique options for gifts. I've always been a big fan of Etsy, too, but it's often a bit overwhelming - especially when you're searching for one particular product, and you come up with 100 options just for that. I found about 20 things I think Ryan would love in about an hour, and I know there's more.

Do you give Valentine's gifts to your spouse or partner? What sort of things do you give one another?

5 on friday: new year's favorites

It's the first Friday of 2018 - how crazy is that?! I don't know about your corners of the world, but it's downright frigid here in northern NY. The high today is -5, and I'm sorry, but that's just mean. I would love to take my children outside for a walk or to play in the snow, but it's too cold for that! Instead, Ryan and I have been scouring for activities for the boys to do inside, especially on weekends. I try to remain positive that the cold can't last forever, and I'm focusing on five good things today instead of the bitter freaking cold! I'm linking up today with Smidge of This for 5 on Friday and Meet at the Barre for Friday Favorites.

1 // Bulletproof Coffee is life. I mentioned the other day that Ryan and I are doing a 60-day ketogenic coffee, and it calls for a big ol' mug of bulletproof coffee most mornings. Now, I love a good morning cup, but I've been known to rely too heavily on sugary creamers and sweeteners. This coffee is loaded with good oils, healthy fats...and no sugar. Shockingly, it's delicious! If you want me to detail my recipe on the blog, let me know. It actually keeps me full for hours!

2 // Smart Wool socks - These suckers are saving my life lately because of the bitter cold here in Black River. I'm a fan of big cushy socks like these beauties from Old Navy, but even they can't keep out the cold lately. Smart Wool has been my go-to to keep my toes toasty and warm, especially since our old home is feeling awfully drafty these days.

3 // Bloom Daily Planner - I debated which planner to get for a long time, but I went with this one because it's versatile, and I got an amazing deal here. With all the freelance work I've been doing, my job, FRG, and getting our house renter-ready, life is insanely hectic. I love that this planner gives me room to post goals and my 2018 vision, as well as track those daily tasks. Plus, they're so chic!

4 // The Simply Keto cookbook is fast-becoming a favorite here for me. As we navigate the waters of this new diet, it offers awesome recipes and some insight into how we'll never feel deprived doing a ketogenic way of life. For those who didn't know, keto is basically a very low carb, high fat lifestyle, in which your body is put into a state of ketosis to burn fat for energy. We've both noticed a huge difference in the past week, and I've literally cut my coffee consumption by about 90%! How cool is that?

5 // Our fourth wedding anniversary was yesterday, and I'm so grateful to be married to this man. Through the deployments, the TDYs, the cross-country moves, navigating parenthood, homeownership, and beyond, he's been my rock through it all. Each and every adventure is more fun because of him. Gosh, I'm a lucky woman!

OH - before I forget, the sweet Andrea from Living on Cloud 9 shared a great Spread the Love gift exchange with us that I had to sign up for today. If you'd like to check it out, visit The Blended Blog here to do so.

Happy weekend, sweet friends!

mini memos [2]

Since I posted this last week, a few people mentioned it might be a fun linkup, so I decided to offer up the chance for people to post their own and link them here, as well. Throughout any given day, I think of these little letters to myself and things around me, and I finally started putting them down on paper. And thus - "mini memos" was born. This is a little ode to life lately over here, and it's fun to look back and see those fleeting moments that flash through my mind.

Dear Spencer - Terrible twos aren't a joke, are they? I love that you want to be independent, but goodness gracious, son. Please just let me help you put your diaper on. And don't throw your lollipop at the hairdresser.

Dear running - My legs hurt. Like a lot. And I have 18.12 this weekend, so I'm scared. Please give me a break, or miraculously make Sunday not hurt so bad.

Dear South Africa - We're hopefully booking tickets today to see you in December! I can't wait to be back just in time for your summer!

Dear Porter - Bubby, mama is nervous for your appointment on Tuesday. I'm really hoping we get you some answers because I just want you to be comfortable.

Dear neighbors - You're going to be the reason we really miss New York. Watching Spencer play with his little friends makes my mama heart smile, and I think it will also make my cry when we move.

Dear Army - Please give us our orders. I know you don't owe them just yet, but I must know!

Dear GIFs on iPhone - You make conversing with my friends so much more fun. Thank you for keeping me laughing throughout the day.

Dear margaritas - You're still my favorite. Thanks for making this deployment easier ;)

--------------------------------------

And now, it's your turn...

mini memos

Do you ever find yourself crafting little notes to yourself during the day? I certainly do. I think them in little letter forms, and I was inspired to do something revolutionary today - and just get them down on paper or, in this case, le blog. Life is constantly flying by and changing in a second, and these are just little thoughts that I think - far too fleeting and otherwise gone too soon.

Dear Ryan: This one's for you. Yesterday was your birthday, and I'm really sorry we didn't spend it together. At least they didn't duct tape you like they did in Korea :)

Dear hand-lettering: You're slowly wheedling your way into my OCD heart, and I love it.

Dear fall: I'm watching you slowly creep your way in, and while I love watching the leaves turn, I'm just not ready for summer to go yet.

Dear deployment: Can we break up yet? You've taught me a lot, but I'm over you.

Dear Army: I know we still have time until you owe us orders, but I'm getting impatient. If we could just find out if Ryan's been chosen for assessment (soon), that'd be great!

Dear New York: You've charmed me this summer, I'll admit it. I think I may miss you just a little bit when we move.

Dear Run4PRs: Thank you for leading me on this running journey to the finish line in Chicago. I really needed you!

Dear doggie playdates: Thank you for keeping my pup and, by proxy - me, sane. So grateful for Jenn, Bolt, and the chance for our furry friends to meet.

Dear daycare: If I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times. Thank you, thank you, thank you. You've made it possible for me to do my job again.

Dear DSLR: Why do we have such a love/hate relationship? You take such pretty pictures, but you're so hard to bust out with the boys in all their glory.

------------------------------

And there you have it...What do you think? Should I make this a little link-up?

5 on friday: the adulting edition

It's Friday again! Is it just me, or is this summer flying by way too fast? I should say it's too slow because I want the time to fly and for Ryan to come home...but that means winter is coming (insert GoT theme music), and I'm just not ready for winter yet. I digress. We're heading into another busy weekend starting with my longest run ever tomorrow morning, so here's hoping things go smoothly! And now, it's time for another Friday Five. Today, I'm linking up with Meet at the Barre and Smidge of This for Five on Friday and Friday Favorites.

1 // In super adulting news. I started doing Financial Peace University again by myself last night. Ryan and I have been working with this Dave Ramsey program for a while now, and we've had amazing success. We got off track for a good bit though, and I find it a little disconcerting how good I am at spending money, so I really want to hold myself more accountable. This program is seriously life-changing, guys. Dave Ramsey says that we should "work like no one else now, so that we can live like no one else later." Yes, it means sacrificing some of the latest and greatest, but I've been reminding myself lately that I'd much rather be entirely debt-free and spending my money on travel in the future than living with a few extra things now.

2 // Porter learned how to walk while we were at my parents' in New Hampshire last week. Like, he actually walked...again, and again, and again. Since then though, he hasn't tried at all. He's perfectly content to keep cruising around forever, and while I think it's adorable, I'm kind of at a loss as to why he just doesn't want to walk. Spencer walked early, and once he started, he never stopped. Mamas - any advice?

3 // I posted this on my instagram last night, and it appeared to really resonate with people, so I wanted to share it here, too, if only for my personal accountability. A lot of you know I chronicle my running journey here, but for those who don't, I'm not a fast runner. I'm envious of those who are, but that's just not me - and it'll probably never be me. I'm coming to terms with that though, and I'm just damn proud that I'm out there and moving.

4 // On a more somber note, in the wake of NYS Trooper Joel Davis' death, Fort Drum and the US Army have been under intense scrutiny lately. It saddens me to see such death and destruction, and I urge people to remember that these are not the norm. I hope that people remember that the Army and our military are not defined by radical individuals with tainted histories and, instead, simply honor the memory of a policeman who served honorably through to the end of his watch.

5 // On a much happier note...we're going to Southwick Beach State Park on Lake Ontario tomorrow, and I'm excited to get my boys back to the beach! We haven't been since South Carolina, and I'm ready for some sun and sand - even if it's on a lake. These little men are water babies, which makes my mama heart so, so happy, and I can't wait to dip my toes in the water and splash around!

the days keep ticking

I feel like in the Army, we live and die by countdowns. We're counting the days to a PCS, to the end of a TDY, to the end of a deployment...if it's not one countdown, it's another. And yes, I'm living entirely on this countdown right now. I had my first big meltdown yesterday morning when I got to daycare to drop off the boys. I forgot that Porter needed 3 changes of onesies, and Spencer needed house shoes. That meant I had to go buy some and bring them back - just to prevent having to drive the whole way home.

While I sat there in the car, I literally sulked and cried for a good 30 minutes, trying not to cry in the actual store, wondering how in the heck I'm going to make it 9+/- months without my other half. When I think of it in terms of days, it seems insurmountable. When I think of it in terms of landmarks, it seems slightly more feasible.

And so, that's what I'm going to have to do; plan something every single month to have to look forward to.

This month my FRG co-leader, Amy, and I are throwing a Valentine's party for the spouses and kiddos left behind here at Drum. It won't be anything too elaborate, but here are some of our ideas:

images via here, here and here.

That, alone, should make for a fun planning process, at least, and I'm really grateful for the opportunity to stay pretty darn busy because I won't stop and think about how lonely it is without Ryan around.

For March, I'm thinking seriously about signing up for the Old Orchard Beach half marathon in Maine. It's a super cheap entry because it's the first time they're running it (pun intended) - just $45 with a tech shirt - and it would really give me a reason to train hard. I'm by no means ready to do a half marathon, but it would give me that landmark to aim for in this deployment.

Danny and I have been running pretty consistently, thankfully, and I think this might be just the ticket...but who knows? We do have the Ocean City half at the end of April, so it's really March that for which we need a landmark, so I'm reaching here...

What sort of ideas do you have to keep busy when your significant other or best friend is away? I'm always looking for something more to do.

I'm linking up today with Jessi for What's Hap-pinning Wednesday!

weekending: deployment weekend one

As I'm sure you've seen, we've started our deployment. Ryan left a few days ago, and we've been blessed to be able to hear from him a few times thus far. He's doing well - exhausted, but well - and he's reached his initial destination, where he'll be for the next few months. He will transfer elsewhere in the middle of the deployment, and communications will be a little more difficult, but we're grateful for this transition.

My mother arrived Friday night, and she's been an absolute saint. I don't think it's truly hit me yet that he's gone, but I'm thankful for a bit of a quieter transition. I think I need this support for the first week.

This past weekend was hard, but we made sure to stay busy! We met our friend Mareike for lunch with her daughter, Marie, on Saturday, ran errands and had a yummy cheat meal so I could eat my feelings. Yesterday, it decided to snow again for the second day in a row, and we took the boys to the Y to swim. For the record, the pools here in Watertown/Fort Drum suck. They're never open, and if they are, they're terrible, but beggars can't be choosers, and my boys don't know any better!

It was Porter's first time in the pool, and he was content as can be. Spencer, of course, loved the water as usual, and he's absolutely fearless. He doesn't mind being dunked, and he clearly needs swim lessons soon!

While I'm nervous about being alone this deployment, I'm determined to make the absolute best of it. I have 9 months to conquer my fears, reach my goals and bond with my boys more than ever before. Here's hoping spring starts soon so we can start our adventures, too.

For the record, I'm going to be using this blog like a journal through the deployment, so while some of it might seem mundane...that's real life, right? Good or bad, this is our journey together, and I want Ryan to be able to read this like he's a part of it - because he is - whether the Army lets him be here or not. So, let's rock this. One weekend down!

let's do this

Ryan has officially been deployed.

Because of OPSEC, I won't share where he has gone, or for exactly how long, but it's going to be nearly a year, and dropping him off wasn't the easiest thing in the world. I don't think it's really hit me just yet, but I know it will soon.

My mother has been a saint, and she's come to NY to help me with the boys as we transition this first week. With Porter teething, Spencer missing Daddy and mama trying to get her feet back under her, I'm so grateful to have family close(ish).

Yesterday, I was able to go the ceremony to case the colors, and even then, I didn't really feel it. But, I'm so, so, so proud of my husband. His sacrifice makes me so proud, and I know how hard this is for him.

So, here's to a 2017 on opposite ends of the world. I have big goals, and I can't wait to make my husband proud of me. Here we go. Let's do this.

currently: the pre-deployment edition

The days are ticking away quickly now, just like I knew they would. When you want time to stand still, it never does. That's just reality. While I wish that time would stand still, I also know that it's inevitable, and I kind of just want to get the farewells over and done with, if that makes sense. Let's get this deployment started and start the countdown to them coming home again! Basically, I'm just trying to weather the storm and make it through...and keep myself busy in the meantime. So, I'm linking up today with Jessi at Jessi's Design for another What's Hap-pinning Wednesday.

1 // Ryan got me Rachel Cruze's book, Love Your Life, Not Theirs, and it's been an awesome reminder of why we need to focus so heavily on finances. We're such a society of comparisons, and between my blog and my shop, as well as my personal facebook, it's so easy to let envy talk you into debt. I'm loving the concept of the separation of church and state in that respect, and I'm so ready to nail down our finances while Ryan's deployed. This mama has big goals, friends!

2 // I've been really working on building up my shop inventory - and range - and I love what I've started to feature! I have leggings, dresses and so much more, and it's fun. I even have a few little brand reps like Ellie, wearing the Hazel Dress, and I'm just dying at how cute she looks!

3 // I've been finding my rhythm with running, and I'm starting to feel really good. My run times are still mostly garbage, but I'm going for time over distance right now, and I think that's where I need to be for a little bit longer. I'm going to have a good number of miles on my legs this month, and that alone makes me happy. Pretty soon, I'll be starting Hal Higdon's running plan for marathoners, and I'm looking forward to it (mostly).

4 // Porter is officially crawling! The little man crawled all the way from the living room to the kitchen last night (protesting the whole way), but made it! I'm so proud of my munchkin man. Now if he'd just cut those darn teeth.

5 // My living room is next on my list to KonMari. The boys have so many toys, and while I know they need toys, they don't need 18973209482903843 toys. I'm going to consolidate with their favorites and find a balance in our living room so it's finally functional again. I might even share a picture ;)

6 // Ryan and I had a date day last week, and it was amazing! We're working on spending as much quality time together as possible, and I'm so thankful to be able to do so. We're hoping to get one more date in, so keep your fingers crossed, please!

Bear with me, please, as we head into this deployment. I'm having all the feels, and I'll do my best to get control of it soon!

new year in new hampshire

Well, I didn't quite make my 70-post goal last year, but I did close out the year well, and I'm happy to have the posts to look back on a good, albeit difficult, year. 2017 is shaping up to be an entirely different year with Ryan's deployment, as well as all my goals for the year. Truth be told, I'm really looking forward to it - as crazy as that sounds!

We rang in the new year in New Hampshire celebrating a belated Chrismakkuh with my family. Both my brothers in law are Jewish, so we celebrated both holidays together since Josh was on call over Christmas and Ryan was OIC. It was a lot of fun! It was a little stressful with the kiddos, and Porter managed to catch the raging cold that Spencer and I have been fighting for a few weeks, but we're glad we went and equally glad we came home.

Spencer got to experience his first time sledding with Ryan, Uncle Adam and Uncle Josh, and he loved it. He didn't want to go inside for nap time despite the fact that his cheeks were chapped, the snow was deeper than he is tall, and he was shivering. I love that my little boy loves the outdoors, and I can't wait until Porter can be out there with his big brother. I see a lot of fun times in the pool coming this summer!

There's a part of me that's so sad Ryan is going to miss so much this coming year, but there's another part of me that is so grateful for the family we have. I know that my brothers in law will be great surrogate fathers in his absence, and I'm so grateful for their love and kindness. And mostly, I'm grateful for the time we do have together before he leaves.

Here's to a wonderful 2017.

goal-getter: december

I wanted to put my goals down again because they actually lingered in my mind in November, so I guess that's progress! I also want to take a look back at those November goals, see how did, and see how I can get better going forward. In November, I committed to do the following:

1. Lose 3 lbs - I did this - healthily! :)
2. Finish the DIY shoe rack - fail
3. Run 14 times - fail - but I did run 10 times, which was better than October
4. Get Ryan to do a blog again - I asked him...does that count?
5. Plan Spencer's 2nd birthday party - I did this! We celebrated yesterday, and I'll recap soon.
6. Schedule our temple sealing - We did this! We were sealed on Saturday, December 3rd in the Palmyra NY temple.

So, looking back, I think I accomplished the big things last month! Now it's onto the December goals:

1. Lose 4 lbs - I'm doing weight watchers weekly, and it feels great to have the accountability! I'm by no means fat, but I'm doing this for fitness, to show my boys the value of really taking care of oneself. No more junk food...preparation is key.

2. Finish the DIY shoe rack - Maybe December is the month?! I really want it done before the real snow comes because it will be such a lifesaver when we're putting wet, soggy shoes away.

3. Run 14 times and make 1.5 miles my short run - I think it's time I retired the "one for time" bit that I've been resting on lately. I can make time for a 1.5 mile run, and I did it today in the freezing cold. It's time to get my act together and start loving running again! I did enter a lottery for a race, so I'll know soon if I got in...if I did, I'll share!

4. DIY Christmas presents - I really want to do some DIY gifts this year. I've done a few before like this glitter state for my brother-in-law's sister, and I'd love to have some on hand for friends and neighbors.

5. Get our family photos - Le sigh. We have them scheduled for Saturday, so we'll see if they actually happen?! If they do, we'll finally have pictures for very last minute Christmas cards!

6. Create a deployment wall - Spencer is just old enough to understand that Daddy is leaving for a long time, and I want to make something that offers both of us a visual reminder of his return. I think it will help!

Do you guys write goals down on or off the blog? Do you think that it helps you?

thank you

I don't have a lot to say today, but I want to say this to our veterans today: thank you. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to live the lives we lead today. Thank you for bravely taking your sacrifices in stride and for serving dutifully and faithfully. Thank you for your tireless commitment to keeping our liberties at the forefront of your minds. Thank you so very, very much for your service.

Our country has disappointed me the past couple days in the wake of this election - less about the outcome and more about our collective reaction. To those burning flags in protest of our president-elect: I implore you to, instead, thank a veteran for giving you the freedom to do so.

Regardless of who you voted for, or your own personal convictions, the outcome has been determined, and it's our duty as Americans to stand strong, as ever. Make the changes you wish to see in the world around you and effect your own changes. That is how you can honor your military members.

And so, veterans - and to my own husband, my favorite veteran of all, thank you. Thank you for all you do, and please know how grateful I am for all of your service, dedication and hard work.

what's happening wednesday

I absolutely refuse to post anything political because it is so very, very volatile, but I want to say that I believe in America, Americans and the chance for us to rebuild our nation again. And with that, I'm mostly just glad this darn election is over! But onto important things, really…Today, I'm linking up over at Jessi's Design for What's Hap"pinning" Wednesday to share what's new with the Moores!

Porter Dean is 5 months old today! This little boy is not really all that little. He's 25.5 inches long, 15 lbs and wears 6-9 month clothing easily. He was sleeping through the night, but he's started pooing in the middle of the night, which has started a wakeup a night again. He's a quiet, mellow little man who's really only vocal when hungry or tired. He thinks his brother is the greatest thing since sliced bread, loves to be held or worn and plays for hours on end in the exersaucer. He's done so well with sleep training that I'm a really proud mama. Also, he's completely weaned - which has turned out to be a  great blessing for both my mental health and his physical health.

Spencer Bruce is less than a month from 2 years old. He's entered what Mr. Rogers called "the age of separateness," and it's been a trying month or so around here. He's such a good boy, but he has such a strong will, and while that's a good thing, the tantrums are not. Disciplining him has been hard, and he needs 100% consistency, which is even harder because Army life is not consistent at all.

Ryan's deployment orders are in. I can't say exactly when or where he's going because of OPSEC rules, but he is going, and he's leaving pretty soon. My heart hurts thinking about it, but I want to make him proud and know that I will do everything in my power to hold down this little fort of ours. Winter will be the hard part, but I'll make sure our last summer here at Fort Drum is one for the books, if it's the last thing I do!

Black River Boutique is doing quite well, and I just love sewing my new holiday prints! My very first show is this weekend in Chaumont, so I'm hoping to just have a fun, exciting day sharing my goods with the locals. Here's hoping it goes well!

What's new with you?
