three little moores (surprise!)

If you follow me on instagram, you've probably already seen our big news, but if you don't, then surprise! It's true - we're officially expecting another little Moore baby in early April of 2019, and we couldn't be more thrilled!

A few people have asked why we announced (and why we've historically done the same) our pregnancy so early. It's pretty simple, really. Ryan and I truly believe that life begins at conception, and we believe that this little life should be celebrated and loved from day one. And, should the worst happen, we would want to be surrounded and uplifted by our family and friends, rather than alone in grief. Obviously, I've had two very healthy pregnancies, so we're expecting and praying for the same this time, but you never know. This isn't everyone's cup of tea, and that's okay! For us though, this feels right :)

Some down and dirty details for the curious-minded people who've asked these questions:

// Was this baby planned?
I always find this such a funny question! But yes, essentially. We knew our family didn't feel complete with just two, so we'd been hoping and trying for a third. Ryan's endless TDYs often interfered with trying, but God's timing is always perfect.

// Will we find out the sex of the baby?
Nope! You might remember that Ryan and I didn't find out until Spencer was born either. We found out with Porter, and while I don't regret it, there's nothing quite like that surprise on baby's birthday.

// Are we hoping for a girl?
Truthfully, yes! I think a girl would be so fun. That said, I would be thrilled with another boy. I know how to raise little boys now, and I think a little boy gang would be pretty awesome, too.

// Will you stay active this pregnancy?
Yup - as long as physically possible! Because of my knee surgery, running may take a backseat somewhat as my ligaments stretch, but I'll definitely be swimming throughout.

// Are you going to keep working after baby number 3?
That's a good question. I love writing, and I love what I do. That said, daycare is astronomically expensive, and it's starting to weigh on us how much we miss while they're at school. We're weighing all the options, but right now, yes, I'm planning to keep working.

This baby is so loved already, and we're thrilled to be embarking on this journey (God willing) one more time. Please cross those fingers and say a prayer that Ryan's impending deployment changes though, because that might seriously impact timelines.

porter dean's birth story

This post is long overdue, as Porter is already 3 months old, and I really just wanted to take the time to sit down and reflect on this time in our lives with our newest baby. Transitioning to a family four has been so sweet - hard - but so, so sweet. When we found out we were expecting baby number two, I expected my pregnancy to be very similar to what I felt while pregnant with Spencer. It was vastly different though, and we were thrilled to discover it actually was a second boy! I could've sworn it was a girl, so I was really shocked and surprised.

Throughout my pregnancy, I struggled with my OBs up here at Fort Drum. I couldn't find one I really liked, while I loved my OB in Arizona. At 34 weeks, I switched practices for the second time to A Woman's Perspective with Dr. Cain, and I finally felt pretty good. They listened to my concerns, and I felt like everything was going smoothly. At 37 weeks pregnant, things started going a little haywire. I'd have contractions every single day between three and seven minutes apart for almost six hours at a time that would later die down. We went to L&D twice, and I got sent home.

They stripped my membranes at 37 weeks and assured me it wouldn't be long. They did it again at 38 weeks. And 39 weeks. And 40 weeks. And they told me that there was no way I'd be overdue...and that our baby was going to be tiny. At 40 weeks, I was so uncomfortable, and I'd been in prodromal labor for 3 weeks consistently. I begged for an induction, and they said New York state law wouldn't allow it until week 41, so I waited. At 41 weeks and one day, they started my induction at 7 AM.

Dr. Cain was certain that my body would do its thing naturally since I was three cm dilated and 90% effaced, so they started cervidil right away. I started having contractions, but nothing was painful. They were consistently two minutes apart, so they started my ampicillin drip for GBS, since I needed four units before he was born. They checked me every three hours, but nothing changed. I was still three cm dilated and 90% effaced with contractions two minutes apart. I was so frustrated. Finally, at 4 PM, they said they'd start pitocin to move things along.

Because I'd had the same with Spencer, I knew I was too tired mentally and physically to do it naturally, so I asked for my epidural right away. It took almost immediately, but it was so strong that everything was numb. I couldn't feel any contractions, so I couldn't tell if they were continuing. (They were.) My water, however, wouldn't break, so they did it - and despite the fact that I warned them what happened with Spencer, the exact thing happened again. With every contraction, Porter's heart rate dropped from 157 bpm to 40. And it continued this way for hours...and hours...and hours.

I couldn't nap because the nurses kept coming in, afraid for Porter's health. Nobody checked me, I was extremely, extremely frustrated. They infused saline into the cord to relieve stress, but because the waters had been broken, it kept leaking out. They started talking about a c-section, but I asked them to check me around 3 AM because I thought I maybe felt a little pressure. Finally, they said I was 10 cm and ready to push.

My doctor hustled in, my night nurse took a leg and Ryan took the other one. I started pushing, but because my epidural was so strong, I couldn't feel my contractions or when I needed to push. It felt a lot more labor-intensive than Spencer's birth, and though I only pushed for ten minutes, I distinctly remember telling Ryan I couldn't do it. One push later, and our second little prince, Porter Dean Moore, was born weighing 8 lb 7 oz and 22 inches long - two whole inches and pounds bigger than his older brother.

From the start, Porter has been such an easy baby. Spencer was more difficult by a mile, and Porter has nearly slept through the night since day one. Even in the hospital, the nurses insisted I wake him every two hours to feed him, which was silly since he barely got below his birth weight. My time in the hospital here in New York is bittersweet. I really hated it, but I left with our sweet man, so that made it worthwhile. I had to stay for 48 hours despite the fact that I had no tearing and the easiest recovery because New York state law states that anyone GBS positive has to. It was one of the most frustrating experiences of my life because the staff was unfriendly, they messed up my chart and sent in social workers and generally didn't do their job well.

And yet, I choose to look back at this time as a fond memory because we now have two sweet boys in our life, and the transition has been fairly seamless since we got home. He fits in so well because he's quiet, sweet, observant and totally obsessed with his brother. It's a hard time in our lives with many adjustments, but we wouldn't change it for anything. We sure do love our little Porter Dean.

five on friday: welcome september

It's the first Friday in September! I can't believe it. It's a crisp, cool morning here in northern NY, but the forecast shows that it's really not fall yet, with temps promising upper 80's again next week. I can dream though, right?! Anyway, I'm participating in another five on Friday because I'm so excited for a long weekend! Ryan has a 4-day, I have a 3-day, and we have some big things coming up. Today, I'm linking up with A. Liz Adventures and Hello Happiness.

1. Sleep Training

Porter will be 3 months old next week, and we decided to get the ball rolling on sleep training this guy. We waited a long time with Spencer, but their situations were totally different, too. Spencer woke every 3 hours (aka 3 times a night) up until about 6 months. Porter has been doing 1 wake-up a night since we got home from the hospital. Because of this and because he's a strong little guy with a healthy growth curve, we've officially moved him out of our room into the guest room in the pack 'n play for now. Things we've discovered and used for night one? He's a tummy sleeper (and fully capable of lifting and moving his head if need be), he like noise, so I think we need a white noise machine, and he still has to get used to having a lot of space. Onto night number 2 tonight...

2. 3-Day Potty Training

^^^ image via

I hesitate to admit we're giving this a go, but since we have a long weekend, we decided it was worth an honest shot. Spencer has been showing us signs of comprehension and readiness for a while now. He's told me "I poo-poo", removed his diaper, wanted to sit on the potty, etc. We're going to give this bad boy a real go this weekend, and this is the method we'll be using. Have you ever potty trained in 3 days or less? I'm interested to hear your experiences!

3. Ulta Haul

^^^ image via

I've been needing new makeup for a minute (or ten now). I always put off buying it though because it costs a pretty penny and, honestly, I'm a makeup newb. I really don't know the first thing about contouring, shadows, toning, or any of it. But I snagged this coupon, and I went to town. I got about $300 worth of goods for just $115, and I'm pretty excited to adult again - makeup style. I snagged some new mascara from Benefit, a Bare Minerals contouring kit, some Anastasia brow definers...yeah, let's see how this goes!

4. Financial Peace University

^^^ image via

Ryan and I actually started this a good while ago - and finished it - but during my maternity leave, we got really off track. We made a lot of purchases, including a big-ticket item, our deck. It's not that we can't do these things, it's just that we have a goal of attaining true financial freedom by the end of 2017. With Ryan's deployment, it should be totally possible, but we're going through the course again to reiterate with ourselves and one another just how intentional we have to be about our money.

5. All Things FALL

Flashback to Spencer being 10 months old! I can't wait for fall weather to truly hit though, and yes, I realize just how basic that is. BUT I don't do pumpkin spice anything, so that helps, right? I can't This year, we'll have a 4 month old, as well as an almost 2 year old, and playing in the leaves, drinking cider, picking pumpkins and getting apples will be more fun than ever. I can't wait!

baby moore: 37 weeks

How far along: 37 weeks

Size of Baby: Romaine lettuce

Gender: We're still not telling, but we do know!

Weight Gain: I gave up on this battle. I've gained 32 lbs, and I'm okay with it. It is what it is.

Movement: This baby is far more aggressive with movement than Spencer ever was. At night, baby seems to come alive and feel the need to rip apart my insides with huge, tumbling barrel-rolls. I'm ready for baby to come just to stop that pain! While the movements used to be tender and sweet, baby has literally run out of room.

Sleep: It's kind of a mixed bag over here. When I lie down, baby decides it's time to move. I've been taking half a Unisom, so that's helped sleep eventually come, but I still wake a few times a night to use the restroom.

Workouts: Ancient history. I walk to pick Spencer up from daycare, and to get there and back is about a mile and a half. Because of my sciatic pain, which I never had with Spencer, running just didn't happen. I'm excited to really get back in the swing of things after baby though.

Maternity Clothes: Leggings. All day, every day. I wear tank tops that are normal, but all my bottoms are leggings of the maternity variety. Mamas, if you're looking for great ones, Blanqi has been my go-to...worth every penny.

Cravings/Aversions: This baby is not a health food nut. I really want chili cheese hot dogs, sushi and coke. I've also been extremely partial to strawberries and pineapple, so that helps. Ice is my go-to lately, as well, which I'm sure has something to do with the fact that I can't eat much anymore. That dreaded morning sickness has hit again in full force.

Best Part of the Week: I'm down to weekly appointments. I have a test today where we'll check the fluid levels around baby, see how much baby has dropped and whether I've dilated further. We're almost there, folks!

Can't Wait For: Baby! Seriously. It's time :)

baby moore: 26 weeks

For my 30th birthday, I offer up a bumpdate because, what's better than being 26 weeks pregnant on your 30th birthday?! But seriously, we woke up this morning to a 2-hour delay for Ryan on post due to ice, a happy baby and a morning with a cup of coffee in bed...it really doesn't get better than that!

How far along: 26 weeks

Size of Baby: A head of lettuce

Gender: We're not telling - but we do know…and we're thrilled!

Weight Gain: My scale taunts me daily. If I go by the first weight I had at the doctor at 6 weeks, I'm up 16 lbs. It's okay...I'm dealing ;)

Movement: Oh yes! Ryan's seen the peanut dance through my dress at skirt, and this bean seems to think that early mornings are now the best time of day to let mama know that they are having a blast in there.

Sleep: I sleep like the dead, and it's wonderful! I do have the weirdest dreams though. Last night, for example, I was aboard the star ship Enterprise, which crashed into the water off a cliff and turned into a cruise ship, which then proceeded to sink at port. I think I should quit working in cruising.

Workouts: Working out has become a bit of a painful topic with my. I've had very bad sciatic nerve and round ligament pain this time around, which seems to force me to cut my runs short. I try to run about 5 miles total a week now, and I do a mix of yoga and walking to supplement.

Maternity Clothes: My pants are all maternity. All my tops are normal. I've got a penchant for long shirts anyway, so it works out :)

Cravings/Aversions: Baby does not want spinach. Baby wants pizza...all. day. long.

Best Part of the Week: I finally got out for a run two days ago, and it was amazing. It was slow, and it felt like poo, but moving felt like such freedom again. This mama can't wait to put the miles back on her legs!

Can't Wait For: Oddly enough, I can't wait for my glucose test. That bugger is looming over my head this time around haha

i confess

Inspired by the lovely Chelsea at Anchors Aweigh, I'm confessing a few things over here today because this has, inadvertently, been one heck of a week. We drove back from New Hampshire on Monday (doozy), then Ryan and Spencer have been battling nagging colds (double doozy) and finally - the icing on the cake - I got a call from Spencer's daycare yesterday that my peanut got hurt. They were playing with sensory toys, and Spencer tripped and fell. One of the bigger boys tripped over him and accidentally kicked him in the mouth. Exhibit A:

Cue extreme mama guilt. I went over there, picked him up, took that picture for urgent care and our neighbor who's a nurse, but the consensus was that it didn't need stitches. He just needs to heal on his own. We spent the afternoon snuggling, eating popsicles and with mama hovering over him because my. poor. baby! He's doing so much better today, his lip looks almost normal, and I'm recovering from the trauma of baby blood. So, onto my confessions.

I confess that in the past week, I've crashed my car into the garage and dropped my sewing machine down the stairs. My car and the garage are fine. My sewing machine is not (it's already been replaced).

I confess that I haven't worked out in 8 days. Like, at all. It's been cold, my boys have been sick, I've been sulking, and we were visiting home. I stepped on the scale today though, and I really didn't like that number. I'll be getting a quick bodyweight workout in today.

I confess that although I stopped drinking coffee for a while there, I'm back on the bean. Oh, sweet bean, you taste glorious at 6 AM when I'm getting up to get things done!

I confess that I'm not that excited about turning 30 next week. I've never been the biggest fans of birthdays, and I swear, this mama is feeling her age this week. I think that pregnancy isn't exactly giving me a glow either.

I confess that my Garmin watch tells me at least 13 times a day to MOVE! I work at a desk, you darn watch! What do you think I'm going to do? Laps around the house? Actually, that's a good idea!

baby moore: 19 weeks

I can't believe I'm already almost halfway with this pregnancy...and that my last update was seriously a month ago. They weren't kidding when they said that time flies the second/third/fourth time around. I'm so busy with Spencer, work, life and everything that I barely have time to reflect on it. That said, I'm so thrilled to share another update with you.

How far along: 19 weeks

Size of Baby: Papaya

Gender: We did an early ultrasound while we were in Utah around 16 weeks, so we're pretty certain we know what baby Moore is, but you know there's always a margin of error! We find out for sure on the 12th...but I'm still not sure whether we'll share.

Weight Gain: Woof. I'm up 11 lbs. Hello, double digits! Here's the thing - I'm still not at my starting weight that I was when I got pregnant with Spencer. I consider that a victory.

Movement: I started feeling the peanut a few days ago for sure, and I finally felt the little bean on the outside for the first time two nights ago!

Sleep: I am finally sleeping like the dead. I take a potty break or two at night, but then I'm back out until I have to wake up to work out at 6 AM.

Workouts: I've been making a point of getting a run in every single day - even if it's just a mile. Granted, that's the past few days. Spencer and I have been passing the same cold back and forth for a few weeks, and I'm finally getting over it, so I'm happy to be back to activity.

Maternity Clothes: I'm wearing a mix. I live in my Blanqi leggings if I'm not wearing my pre-pregnancy jeans with a hair tie. For church, I'm definitely wearing maternity dresses because my pencil skirts obviously don't fit anymore!

Cravings/Aversions: It depends on the day. I'm still not really into chicken, and the smell of cooking olive oil makes me nauseous, but other than that, I can do most things in moderation!

Best Part of the Week: I got to hear the sweet peanut's fast heartbeat on Tuesday! It was hovering right at 150 bpm - strong and steady. Baby is low, low, low, and doctor thinks I'm measuring a touch on the small side, but it was so good to hear that sweet sound again.

Can't Wait For: Finding out the gender for sure on the 12th! I really have no doubts at all, but I'll be happy to have the health, size and everything else confirmed. Here's to a really good screening next week!

what's up, salt lake city?

I've been missing the past few days because we traveled to Utah on Tuesday! Ryan and I planned an early Christmas here with his family in Pleasant Grove, and we spent most of Tuesday traveling from Syracuse to Utah. It was quite the journey. Spencer did great. He obviously got tired of being contained on the plane, but we were blessed to have wonderful fellow travelers that didn't seem to be too bothered by him. Plus, he managed to take a proper nap on both flights, and it was heaven! He fought it a bit on the first flight (hence baby scratches on me), but he slept over an hour. The second flight was a little more crammed, and he only slept about 45 minutes.

We made it though, and we were so glad to be off the plane and in some fresh, cold air. It's definitely colder (and snowier) out here, and I'm loving it. Spencer's getting a kick out of seeing the white stuff on the ground, as well as seeing his Grandma and Papa on something other than FaceTime.

Yesterday, we treated my mother-in-law to an early Christmas present and took her to an early (surprise!) gender ultrasound. Baby Moore #2 was moving and shaking in there, but despite the fact that it didn't want to, we totally managed to see the goods! We're pretty sure we're keeping it under wraps though, besides family, because that's just how we roll!

Peanut looks perfect though, and I can't wait to see the gender confirmed one more time on January 12th with my normal OB. This was a place in Utah that solely does 3D and gender ultrasounds. We chose to do a 2D, but we did the gender determination, and I'm pretty glad we did! Any bets on what this biscuit might be?! And no, you can't see any determining factors in this picture ;)

baby moore: 15 weeks

Second trimester bliss is in full swing, so I figured it's time to give another brief update on wee little baby Moore part deux growing over here. It's crazy how fast time flies the second time around!

How far along: 15 weeks

Size of Baby: Orange

Gender: We've decided to find out this time! For practicality's sake, I think it will help in knowing what we can reuse, as well as what we need to (read: what I want) to buy new this time around. We have our anatomy scan on January 12th, so it's just around the corner!

Weight Gain: I had an appointment on Tuesday with my OB, and I hadn't gained any weight from the last time. I'm still 4 lbs up, and I think that finally feeling better and being able to run again has helped level out that immediate weight gain, thankfully.

Movement: I haven't felt anything yet, but I remember that I didn't with Spencer until about 16 weeks. I finally have that weird little bump when I lie down though from my uterus moving up a bit, and I think that's about the time I started feeling flutters the first time around. We'll see!

Sleep: Sleep has been a little better! I still average about 3 potty breaks over here, and I do one wakeup with Spencer, but we're working on weaning that out soon. Logically, I know he doesn't need it, but it saddens me to make him cry and retrain him that way overnight.

Workouts: It feels so good to run again! I did a 4 mile indoors on Monday at the on-post track, and I did 3 miles outside yesterday. I feel energized, and that's the best feeling ever.

Maternity Clothes: Do the leggings count? I can still fit fairly comfortable into my normal clothes, but I love the leggings, so I'd be lying if I said I wasn't wearing those a lot already.

Cravings/Aversions: I still can't really do chicken. I also hate the taste of vinegar right now - and this is from someone who always loved the taste of apple cider vinegar and oil + vinegar dressing. I want to eat all the clementines though, and I'd give my left leg for a sausage biscuit.

Best Part of the Week: Feeling less nauseous and getting to hear the baby's heartbeat again! It's still a little surreal knowing we're having number two, so hearing a steady heartbeat of 147 bpm made me one happy mama.

Can't Wait For: Feeling the baby kick! And, I'm really, really looking forward to finding out the gender in a month!

baby moore: 12 weeks

I won't do this every week like I did with Spencer, but I feel the need to show the biscuit some love, and I want to document parts! We're about 12 weeks, so I figured it was about time for a bump.

How far along: 12 weeks

Size of Baby: Passion fruit

Gender: We think we might find out this time, but I'm hesitant! I have a strong feeling that it's a girl though.

Weight Gain: I don't know if it's the fact that I got pregnant 20 lbs lighter than I did with Spencer, but holy moly. 12 weeks and up 4 lbs.

Movement: Nothing that I can feel yet

Sleep: What's that? I do one wakeup a night on average with Spencer and at least 3 potty breaks. Sigh.

Workouts: Finally running again! I'm averaging about 3 runs a week and 10 miles a week right now. I did 3 miles today.

Maternity Clothes: None yet, but I think I'll cave and wear them sooner this time around. All my clothes are tight because I got smaller clothes after losing so much weight.

Cravings/Aversions: Avoiding chicken like the plague, but craving poutine. I'm also struggling with spinach, but eating lots of fruit.

Best Part of the Week: Finally feeling like I could run again! I'm still struggling with nighttime nausea, but feeling a bit stronger, and I'll take it.

Can't Wait For: Feeling the baby kick! Right now it's still so surreal that we're having another baby. At my most recent appointment, we heard the biscuit's heart rate right at 160 bpm, and it was such a welcome sound. Love :)

when three became four

We found out I was pregnant about three weeks ago. While we weren't trying, per se, we weren't not trying either. We knew when we had Spencer that we wanted our children to be close in age, especially since life in the Army is so unpredictable. Spencer would have a guaranteed built-in playmate, a best friend from birth and someone with whom to grow up - all of which were so important to us.

I didn't really suspect I was pregnant, to be honest. I was a little late, but it's so common for your lady time to be a little off after childbirth, and my time has always been between 3-5 early or late since Spence was born. I wasn't concerned. Six days hit though, and I was a little nervous. I didn't feel nauseous or anything though, so I didn't think too much of it. All I really felt was exhausted, but who isn't exhausted with a ten-month-old baby and a full-time job?

I asked Ryan if he thought I should test, and he said I should just wait a week. With Spencer, it took over two weeks of being late for a test to show positive, so I agreed, and just tried to put it out of my mind. When I went to the commissary that afternoon though, I was still thinking about it, so I bought a test - just to be safe. I really didn't think I was pregnant.

We got home, and I took the test and left it on the counter while I changed Spencer and got him busy playing with toys. After about ten minutes, I remembered I took the test, went in to check…and there it was. Two very obvious pink lines. It was definitively positive. I convinced myself that I let it sit too long, so it was my fault and it was a false positive, so I took the second test and checked in exactly 3 minutes. Still very, very positive.

I don't remember breathing for a minute. I felt my cheeks and chest flush and had a moment of panic, then excitement, then all logic went out the window. Now, bear in mind I really wanted to surprise Ryan this time around when we found out we were expecting. I wanted to do something sweet and surprising and beautiful. So, how did I do it? Not that way at all.

I called him at work and said, "I need you to come home." He's in the middle of gunnery and very busy, so he knew something was up. I wasn't sure how to tell him, so I just blurted it out…"How do you feel about giving Spencer a little brother or sister?" He was so excited that he yelled out! Ladies, there's nothing more wonderful than a man excited to be a father - whether it's the first, second or third time. It put my heart at ease, and calmed my nerves.

Since finding out, I've had my first ultrasound to confirm dates, and we saw a steady, healthy heartbeat at 122 beats per minute. I think I was in denial until the point. We're looking at a June 1st due date, and we couldn't be more excited.

And yes…I'm nauseous as heck. This pregnancy is nowhere like it was with Spencer. I've had very little - if any - relief, and I'm going to be put on diclegis to hopefully help me function a little better. I do, however, feel really excited and blessed to be carrying Spencer's little sibling, and I can't wait to see what the future has in store for our family of four!

5 months of spencer bruce

5 months. I can barely believe our little man is 5 whole months old today! They said time flies, and they weren't kidding. Every day, this little boy changes just a little bit more, and I watch that silly, creative little personality develop. Every day, I fall more and more in love with this little half Ryan/half me, and I can't believe he's all ours. Sometimes, Ryan and I just stop and stare…wondering how in the world we could be so blessed to have such a perfect, handsome little boy. We are so, so lucky.

Weight: Spencer is now a hearty 14 lb 3 oz, which is still on the peanut end for a 5-month-old. We've been encouraged to start solids for a while now, and he's been exhibiting all the signs that he's ready, so we're going to bite the bullet and start a little bit today, while otherwise exclusively breastfeeding. Here's hoping he loves it! We'll recap those adventures tomorrow ;)

Clothes: I've officially retired the 3 month onesies, though he still fits in his 3 month dress pants. Most of the 3 month sweats are a little snug about the waist, so I retired those, as well. He's comfortably in 3-6 month onesies, as well as 6 month onesies from Carters, though his petite little legs are bit too small for his 6 month pants right now. Luckily, we're wearing a lot of rompers and shorts these days with the warm weather!

Milestones: What didn't this boy learn to do this past month?! Raspberrying at momma and daddy is his new favorite pastime, and I love it. He mimics us when we do it to him, and though there's a tremendous amount of drool to accompany it, I love it! He smiles so darn big, and he's officially learned to roll from back to front - though he's an obstinate little guy and doesn't want to do it ever again. He's much more interested in scooting around on both his tummy and his back. I think we're going to have a crawler soon! We've also noticed his first two teeth starting to bud. Neither has cut yet, but we're getting so close. Oh yes, and he loves using his voice. A lot.

Sleeping has been worse this month - about 2 wake ups a night - but last night he threw me for a loop and slept from 8-5. I was so surprised that I got up to make sure he was still breathing. He's also officially sleeping without a swaddle…finally. It was a tough break, but we knew it had to happen sooner rather than later!

Spencer's Favorites this Month: He's absolutely loving his Sophie la Giraffe teether, and I think it's his favorite of all the toys we have for him. Because he's not loving lying down anymore, he's also really partial to the Baby Bjorn because he loves facing out and being at our eyeline. And, above all else, he loves the warm weather! I've never seen such a happy boy in the sun!

Mama's Thoughts this Month: This month has been more challenging than the last few for a few reasons. First, losing our sitter and balancing work has been difficult. Second, the sleep regression (though not terrible), made for a sleep-deprived and stressed mama. All that said though, I'm loving watching Spencer grow more and more assertive every single day. I wouldn't trade this for anything in the world!

3 months of spencer bruce

Boy, is it tugging at my heartstrings to wish our sweet little Spencer Bruce a happy 3 month birthday today! I feel like just yesterday Ryan and I were in the hospital to welcome our little bean, and now he's a proper little baby - no longer is he my tiny, petite little newborn. Every single day, I watch his personality grow more and more apparent, and it's amazing! He's such a sweet, easygoing little man.

We're down to one wakeup (most of the time) a night now. We have a good nightly routine where he gets his bath, which he just loves, around 8:30, then I top him off with a quick nurse and Ryan reads him a bedtime story. He probably doesn't understand a word of it, but it's so sweet to watch my two men in there in the glider together. Spencer usually goes right down around 9:15, and then we have about an hour before we're both fast asleep, as well. He wakes around 4 AM to nurse, and he usually goes right back to sleep. Last night, he was fussy and a bit off, and this mama has a sneaking suspicion the wee man might be teething far too early.

We got a part-time babysitter this month, too, to help us out. It was a mixed emotion kind of thing for me. I'm the type of person that wants to do everything, but working full-time from home, trying to stimulate my son enough, work out and get household chores done just wasn't working. And so, Rebecca comes 4 days a week for 3 hours a day to help this mama get a workout in while she watches and plays with our sweet boy…and he loves her.

Weight: At 3 months old, Spencer is now 12 lbs 3 oz…his pediatrician says that's the 25th percentile, but he's growing just fine.

Clothes: Spencer has a little frog belly that fits in all his 0-3 month onesies easily, but he's still swimming in his 0-3 month pants. We're working on it though, and those baby rolls make my heart just melt!

Milestones: Spencer is completely crib-trained! He actually did it in just one night, which was incredible. He naps in his crib now, plus he loves all the room these days. And, because we're afraid of sleep regression, the Rock 'n Play has officially been retired until we (God willing) have another child. He's also focusing really well these days, tracking sounds and lights, and he wants to be stimulated all the time. We work on time in the Bumbo, and he loves cooing and chatting with his Daddy.

Spencer's Favorites This Month: He loves, loves, loves his Bumbo. With better neck control, he can sit in there and have full conversations with Daddy and see us at eye-level, which is great. He feels like such a big boy! He also loves his bath time. It's so so so fun watching him discover how powerful his little muscles are.

Mama's Thoughts This Month: I'm loving this month of our sweet peanut! He's getting bigger, bolder and more attentive, which is great. He's having a bit of a harder time nursing though because he's so stimulated by other stuff, as well. It seems like he loses focus easily, which has this mama concerned from time to time. I have to say, too, that I was never a fan of my Boppy, but I love it now because Spencer actually does tummy time on it! I think it's one of those things you either love or hate. It didn't work for me with breastfeeding, but it's the perfect playtime accessory now :)

two months of spencer bruce

Two months. Our little Spencer Bruce is two months old today. There's a part of me that's crying inside as a write this because our little peanut really is growing up. He's developing a little personality, he has the funniest little quirks and as we navigate parenthood, I think we're learning as much about ourselves as we are about our son. It hasn't been easy by any means, but it's been immensely worth it.

Baby's Milestones: Spencer has officially learned to roll over from his front to his back - with a good bit of ease. The fun fact of it is that I've yet to see it. Though I work at home and see him 12-13 hours a day, he's only done it while Ryan was watching and I was cooking dinner. He's a big-time smiler, coos at the toys on his playmat and I swear sometimes he's trying to giggle.

One of the biggest milestones, however is in regards to sleep. He's down to 1 (sometimes 2) wake ups per night. I usually nurse him around 3 AM, after he goes to bed around 9:45-10. Then Ryan gives him a bottle around 6 or 7, just as I'm waking up to start working and getting ready for the day. This is loads better than the 3-4 wake ups we were doing there for a while.

Baby's Loves: Spencer still adores his Rock 'n Play. I'm ashamed to admit it, but he's still sleeping in it because we figure one transition to his crib is better than multiple transitions from that, to his bassinet and then the crib. He sleeps like a boss in it, and that's what's really worth it, right? He absolutely loves his Bright Starts play mat and looking at all the toys.

Mama Favorites: We've transitioned from the mittened newborn clothes to 0-3 month clothes, even though he's swimming in them. He has a little frog belly, and it was a little squished in all those newborn pants, so we're going up. It kills me to pack the newborn clothes away, but we'll be saving them for a potential sibling someday.

Right now, I'm loving our Boon Grass Countertop Drying Rack, more than ever. This gem perfectly dries and airs out all his bottles and the multiple pump parts that really need to breathe after being washed. Plus, it's not an eyesore on the counter.

Mama Thoughts: I'm still having a hard time some days getting adjusted to our new schedule and routine, but I wouldn't trade it for the world. The lack of sleep makes some days more difficult than others, but as he grows a little more independent and cheery, things start to even out, and that makes life better. Pumping has also really been a lifesaver for me. Ryan jokes that I should sell my milk, but I think it's perfect for those days we need a sitter and such - and that's amazing.

Motherhood is so challenging, but it is beyond rewarding. I can't believe this little guy has been here for 62 days yet - and we've kept him alive that long (I kid…sort of)! I told Ryan yesterday…I think I could do this again. And I meant it :)

innermost thoughts on fatherhood from ryan

Hello ladies, and gentlemen if there are any husbands who secretly or quietly peruse the blogs of their wives and friends.  This is definitely not Missy.  This is the man who was lucky/blessed enough to marry her through a mix of seduction and trickery; her husband.  Missy has been asking me to write a guest post for awhile now about fatherhood.

It's been 8 weeks and three days since my mini-me came crying and peeing his way into this world, straight out of my sweet wife's lady bits.  I feel like I've been a father forever already.  We were sitting in church today, surrounded by noisy, crying and generally obnoxious children.  For the entirety of my life, these distractions would have annoyed me to the point of silent judginess, and resentment.  Resentment of the undisciplined rug rats, and the obviously horrible parents who had failed to instill any manners or reverence in their tumultuous offspring.  Sitting in the chapel today, gently rocking and swinging my son in order to appease his fussiness, I still heard all of those children make their noises.  But it is plainly obvious that I have changed in the last 8 weeks as I was able to contently sit amidst the cacophony of kinder and be grateful to be with my wonderful wife and handsome little boy.

Before Spencer made his long awaited arrival, I used to spend weekends doing absolutely nothing of consequence.  Hours would be spent reading articles on Slate, Vox, the Wall Street Journal or Business Weekly.  I watched all NINE seasons of How I Met Your Mother on Netflix in the space of six months.  I could take an hour, or up to two and a half hours at the gym.  If I wanted to go for a run, it was a matter of simply changing into some comfortable clothes, lacing up the Asics, popping in the ear buds and firing up the endomondo.  These days are over, and I don't think they're every coming back.

Don't misunderstand me.  We still find time to watch an hour or so of Netflix a night when we unwind.  I still manage to go for a run and get to the gym from time to time.  I peruse articles on google news or things of interest on Facebook daily.  But more often than not, when I find myself staring at my phone at something of nearly no importance,  my attention is called away by the most important thing in my life: my son.  It's easy to get a little frustrated.  I've actually said out loud, "Hey! Can't you see I'm very interested in this article of little to no importance?"  Then I pick him up, swing him around, make any combination of words, noises and pitches in an attempt to placate this little human being who wants to make his existence known to everything within ear shot.  I hold him, stare at him, kiss his head and face.  I'll talk to him, to try to explain my thoughts and feelings, but really I'm trying to figure out what I'm actually thinking and feeling.  In these little monologues with my individual audience, here are some realizations I've come to about this new part of my life.

I love being a father.  I love this little guy.  I'm so grateful that he is in our life.  I'm grateful he is a healthy little boy.  I'd have loved him if he weren't healthy, or if he was a girl.  But I'm grateful that he is a generally easy going, healthy little man.  The fact that he is handsome is just a bonus.  And the issue of him being my ginger clone is ridiculous.

I love my wife more than ever.  She loves being a mother, and she is so grateful to have had a healthy, uneventful pregnancy.  But I know she has sacrificed to bring him into the world.  She had to delay her training in her athletic pursuits, she feared the changes to her body, and the hormonal roller-coaster caused her to fret, worry and panic on more than a half dozen occasions.  She would sob, wail` and cry and I was powerless to allay her fears.  The only thing I could do was hold her, and let her grief crescendo and crest until it receded like the tide on the shoreline.  She would always feel she was a burden for these episodes.  What she doesn't really understand is that it makes me love her more.  Can these episodes be inconvenient?  Sure.  Do I feel annoyed and frustrated in the process when I'm trying to solve the problems she describes to me and I realize I'm powerless to do so?  Yes.  Do I feel like a good husband when I just hold her and let it happen until it passes and I can reassure her afterward that everything is alright?  Absolutely.  It makes me feel like her hero, and I'm grateful to her that she allows herself to be vulnerable enough to help however I can.  And for all of her sacrifices, taking care of him everyday, breast feeding him, bathing him, I know that I married the right woman.  Just another confirmation that I found the right one, even if it was on a cheap dating site on the internet. ;)

I'm going to be open and honest with my son.  This has a big caveat of age appropriateness.  I never want my son think I have a perfect past.  I've made some big mistakes in my life.  When he is old enough I will share these mistakes and let him know what I've learned.  I'll tell him so that when he finds himself in similar circumstances, he will have better awareness than I did.  I hope it will help him make good decisions.  And I want him to know that if a normal guy, a flawed man like me could get through and succeed, that he can too.

It's okay to make mistakes.  It's okay to suck at things.  You always stink at something new.  Don't worry about it.  Do what you're interested in.  If you love it, stick with it and keep doing it until you're good at it.  Try lots of different things.  He might love Japanese calligraphy, cowboy poetry, free diving or rally car racing.  But he'll never know what he loves unless he is exposed to it.  And he will never be good at it if he doesn't try and suck at it for awhile.  If it interests you, get in there and do it.

Work hard.  A good plan and hard work is the key to making anything happen in this life.  And it can't be a one time, or a once in awhile kind of thing.  Hard work has to be consistent and habitual if its going to bear any fruit.  Its good to work hard until it hurts.  It's good to push yourself to the point of discomfort.  This is where progress and achievement happens.  I don't ever want to save my son from skinned knees, tears, bruises, hurt feelings and disappointment.  The things worth achieving in life take the kind of effort and result in the things listed above.  Find what you want, make a good plan, and get after it.  Every day, every week of your life.

Love those you're close to, and serve as many people as you can.  Take care of your family and those closest to you.  Let them know you love them through acts of kindness and service.  Write thank you cards, give lots of hugs, and tell people you love them.  This world needs more grateful, service oriented individuals to make it better.  Start with yourself and those around you.

Don't EVER disrespect your mother.  I might love you unconditionally.  But I CHOSE your mother.  She is my wife, my queen and my lady.  Don't ever take her for granted.  She has done more for your well being than you will ever know.  When you have children of your own, you'll have a better appreciation for the sacrifices she made.  Love her.  Respect her.  Honor her.  Don't do anything that would reflect poorly on her.

I think that's pretty good.  If I can get four main ideas across to him, he'll be better off than I was coming up in the world.  We'll make sure to keep him in church, where he will learn about the redemption of Christ, and where he will be surrounded by positive individuals who will help cultivate his character and reinforce our values.

I love this guy.  I love being a dad.  I hope somebody else finds this insightful or helpful.  God bless.

we're not in arizona anymore

Ladies and gentlemen…we're officially done with Arizona and Fort Huachuca! Ryan finally arrive in New Hampshire this afternoon, and I arrived last Wednesday. My mother flew to Arizona and flew back with Spencer, myself and our two cats, after quite the adventure of the trip. Honestly, the flights weren't bad, but the TSA and airline (United) in Tuscon were terrible. I've never met more horrible, rude and uncaring people in my life. BUT that's done. We're now in NH until Sunday the 28th, and then we're heading up to Drum!

^^^ this little man is settling in nicely

We also received some amazing news this morning. Our closing on our home will officially take place 12/29, and I can't wait to share with you our first home together! We can't wait for this next adventure. I'll do my best to blog in between now and then, but I can't promise anything! This Christmas (and Hanukkah) is all about family, and we sure are enjoying our time together again.

Love to all!

spencer's birth story

I've been meaning to sit down and blog for a few days now, but words can't describe how very much having a baby changes your life, your priorities…and your daily timeline. It's been 6 days since this nugget was born, and our lives have changed immeasurably. Of course, there is the extreme lack of sleep, the delirium that comes with said lack of sleep and the mama brain that causes me to forget everything at the drop of a dime. However, there's also this amazing fullness in our hearts that's nearly indescribable. Spencer is perfection, and when I look at him, I see his father - and that just about brings me to tears.

I don't want to write a traditional birth story for little Spencer Bruce, but it was a whirlwind week when he was born. So, I'll try to process it as succinctly as possible. Last Monday, my OB had ordered a 38 week ultrasound because he thought my amniotic fluid might be low since I was measuring a bit small. We had the ultrasound, peanut looked great, and I expected to hear that the plan was the same - induction on the 8th if baby hadn't arrived. On Tuesday, however, I had my OB appointment, and he said that the scans showed Spencer had stopped growing around week 36. He said it wasn't terribly alarming, but since the baby was on the small side, they wanted him out, rather than in.

So, in a matter of an hour, I was scheduled for a mandatory induction starting late Wednesday afternoon on December 3rd. I was to go in, start Cervidil at 4 PM, then start Pitocin at 4 AM if my labor hadn't progressed enough. It was shocking, exciting and a little terrifying, but we were definitely ready. The Cervidil started contractions pretty quickly, but I didn't dilate much. Overnight, they noticed Spencer started having decels - his heart rate would go from 150 to 67 in a matter of seconds, then level out again. So, they kept me on the monitors all night, and I didn't get a ton of sleep. At 5 AM, they started the Pitocin. Let's just say that that drug did its job. My water broke at 9 AM, and then my contractions really started up; quickly progressing to around 2 minutes apart. Guys, the pain of contractions on labor-inducing drugs is indescribable.

I was also group B strep positive, so I was put on IV penicillin, which compounded the pain. I tried to fight it but by 12 PM, I was in agony, and I opted for the epidural. Though I'd hoped for an all-natural birth, the epidural was amazing, and I was able to get an hour nap before things got real. They noticed that unless I was on my right side, the baby's heart rate would decel again, so they put a scalp monitor on him and tracked it that way. By 4 PM, I was complete, and they told me I was going to do some practice pushes. My nurses, however, said that it was insane, but they could already see the head.

Once I learned to bear down and push properly, they quickly called for the doctor, saying that they didn't think it would be long. Frankly, I thought they were exaggerating. I didn't think there was any way I could be that close, but apparently, I was. I did maybe 12 cycles of pushing with Ryan by my side, counting and breathing with me the whole time. And then, at 4:39 PM, little Spencer Bruce made his appearance known, screaming - and peeing on me - the whole time. It was surreal - I couldn't believe he was out…and that I was right…we had a son!

There's a lot about the night Spencer was born that I can't really recall…it was so overwhelming. Ryan cut the cord, he was placed in my arms and that was it. We were so in love that it had to be madness. And, to top it all off, Spencer is totally, 100% Ryan's mini-me, which makes things even more magical. I have two perfect little ginger men, even though Ryan is pretty sure Spence is more blonde than ginger. We'll see. I have a hunch that I'm right.

We're learning as we go. This parenting thing is not one-size-fits-all by any means. Spencer has truly been great. He has a wonderful, easygoing temperament, and the only times he really cries are when he's wet, cold, being changed or hungry. Remedy those things though, and he's silent as a mouse. He's observant and sweet, his little old man farts that crack us up, makes the funniest noises when he sneezes and changes a little every single day. It's remarkable. Even in the middle of the night when I'm at the end of my rope, Ryan's there to tag-team, and I remember how very blessed I am.

Motherhood is magical, trying, exhausting, emotionally, overwhelming and incredibly, indescribably rewarding. I can't wait to see what the future brings with our little man. I'll talk more about Spencer's name in the coming days, as it has a significant meaning for both Ryan and myself, and I'll picture overload all your feeds, of course :)

it's a boy!

What a whirlwind this past week has been! Unbelievably…miraculously…our little nugget was born, and we are so in love with him.  I fully intend to recount the entire birth story, including the days prior, but it might take a day or two, as we're still settling in.

For now, please allow us to introduce you to our favorite little ginger man who has so completely stolen our hearts. Spencer Bruce Moore was born at 4:39 PM, weighing 6 lbs 7 oz at 20 inches long. He's perfect in absolutely every way.

Be prepared for picture overload in the coming days because this momma is going to go. to. town. Until then, all I have to say is that I totally called it…momma's intuition rocks, Spencer :)

38 (plus) week bump date

I can't believe Thanksgiving has already come and gone! It was such a whirlwind this year, and it was definitely different not being home with family - either Ryan's or my own - this year. We were lucky enough, however, to spend it with our Army family. We've made some wonderful friends here at Fort Huachuca, and it was nice to spend the holiday with one of our favorite families here, who are very shortly PCSing to Fort Wainwright in Alaska. We'll be heading off to opposite corners of the world, but we've been so blessed to meet and spend time with Jeremy, Tiffany and their two sweet children, Cayden and Madison.

And now, life is moving full-speed ahead! We sold Ryan's car this morning, which is a huge relief (and a huge blessing) because it just wouldn't be a great car for the winters in New York or for our growing family. We'll purchase a second car once we're back East, which should weather the climate better. We have our pre-inspection from housing here on post this coming Wednesday, which is our first step towards moving out on the 18th. Ryan has his final day of his 150U course tomorrow, and then he's all mine through the move until his report date at Drum! Our house purchase is moving forward, and we're looking at closing December 29th…which we are SO excited about! But…onto the bump :)

^^^ I always look slightly ridiculous in selfies

How far along: 38 weeks & 2 days

Gender: We're not finding out!

Weight gain: 20 lbs…and I feel all 20 of them. My weight, however, has leveled off.

Maternity clothes: I can still fit into my pre-pregnancy jeans with an elastic, but I don't try anymore. These days, I'm solely in leggings and sweaters, and I'm loving it.

Stretch marks: I have one teeny one on my left hip, which taunts me nightly, but that's the only one I've had. Coconut oil has been a complete lifesaver.

Belly button in or out: It's a very flat pancake these days…does that still count as an innie?

Sleep: I've been sleeping like a rock lately. I have the weirdest dreams in the whole world, but when I'm asleep, I'm just dead to the world.

Best moment this week: Spending Thanksgiving with our wonderful friends and getting to dote on baby Madison was lovely. It was nice, too, to spend this final holiday with my love as just a couple of young newlyweds. Life is going to change so much soon, and I've savored every moment of just us.

Miss anything: I miss being comfortable and not feeling as though I'm going to wet myself all the time. And yet, at the same time, I'm blessed to feel these discomforts.

Movement: Baby Moore has quite the penchant for snuggling with his or her legs all scrunched under my right ribs. I feel a lot of movement very low these days, almost as though baby is ready to make its way out, too, which is exciting!

Cravings: Ice water and coffee. That's pretty much it!

Food aversions: No real food aversions here anymore, which is pretty awesome!

Looking forward to: I have an ultrasound scheduled for tomorrow. I was measuring small at my appointment last week, so my OB wanted me to get in to see if I'm leaking amniotic fluid. He has a sneaking suspicion I might be, which means it's time for baby to come out. I also have an OB appointment on Tuesday, a cervical check to strip my membranes on Friday and, if that doesn't start labor, I'll be induced on Sunday, 12/7. My friends, we're a week away from baby!!!

it's the final countdown

At any given hour of the day right now, you can find me in some crazy flurry of emotion or activity. My hormones are raging, I'm exhausted and I'm so, so excited. It seems like madness to think that just a mere 12 days from now - if no baby decides to arrive before then - little baby Moore will be in our arms. The reality of that is incredible, and yet even 12 days seems so daunting now. People warned me that the last month was the worst, and they weren't kidding!

^^^ image via.

As I reflect on the past 9 months of this pregnancy, I can't help but feel so overwhelmingly blessed. Despite the fact that I complained about my discomfort, and I couldn't seem to get past the ridiculousness of the weight gain issues, this pregnancy has been free of complications. This baby has been, for all intents and purposes, healthy, as has this momma-to-be. I look at this as a massive blessing because, having spent nearly the whole year separated from Ryan, I was able to continue my daily routines and he was allowed to focus on his military duties.

And yet, here we are today. We're just over 3 weeks away from our PCS date. We're under two weeks from having a little baby nugget in our arms, and I'm just waiting, waiting, waiting to see if this peanut will make an early arrival for his/her momma and daddy. I've had a lot of Braxton Hicks, baby has most definitely dropped and I've never before hoped for the pain of labor so very much. Please keep your fingers crossed that baby decides to arrive before induction because, baby Moore, we love you so much! We're ready!
